A saltwater pool is still a chlorine pool

A salt system uses a salt chlorine generator. You add pool salt to the water, and as water passes through the generator's cell, electricity turns that salt into chlorine. The water is only lightly salty, around 2,700–3,400 ppm, about a tenth as salty as the ocean.

People love salt for softer-feeling water, less chlorine smell and steadier chlorine levels without hauling jugs. It still needs care: the cell has to be cleaned of calcium scale, and pH tends to creep up. We'll tell you honestly whether salt is a good fit for your pool.

Salt system services

  • Saltwater conversions

We size the generator, install it, balance the water and add the salt.

  • Salt cell cleaning

Calcium scale removed so the cell makes chlorine again. Skipping this is the top reason cells fail early.

  • Cell replacement

A well-maintained cell usually lasts 3 to 7 years. We replace worn-out cells with the right match.

  • Troubleshooting

Error lights, flow sensors and control boards diagnosed and fixed.

    Pool Repair
  • Water balance

Salt, pH and stabilizer brought into range so the system works properly.

    Chemical Service
  • Surface check

Salt can be hard on some natural stone and metal. We check your deck and equipment before recommending a conversion.

The basics

Salt in, chlorine out

  1. 01

    Lightly salty water

Pool salt is added to about 2,700–3,400 ppm, roughly a tenth as salty as the ocean.

  2. 02

    The cell makes chlorine

As water flows through the salt cell, electricity turns some of the salt into chlorine.

  3. 03

    Chlorine cleans the pool

It sanitizes the water, then turns back into salt, so the salt gets reused.

Before you switch

  • Upfront cost. You'll need the generator and cell, plus installation.
  • The cell wears out. A well-maintained cell usually lasts 3 to 7 years.
  • It still needs care. The cell needs regular cleaning of calcium scale, and pH tends to creep up.
  • Salt and surfaces. Salt can be hard on some natural stone and metal, so we check first.

Questions

Saltwater Systems FAQ

Is a saltwater pool chlorine-free?
No. A salt system makes chlorine from the salt in the water. You just don't have to buy and add it by hand.
How long does a salt cell last?
A well-maintained cell usually lasts 3 to 7 years. Keeping it clean of calcium scale and keeping the water balanced helps it last.
Can you service a salt system you didn't install?
Yes. We clean, repair and replace cells on existing salt systems from the major brands.
