Saltwater vs. Chlorine Pools: What Florida Homeowners Should Know

"Should I switch to salt?" is one of the questions I hear most. Here's the honest answer, starting with a myth.

A saltwater pool is still a chlorine pool

A saltwater pool uses a salt chlorine generator. You add pool salt to the water, and as water passes through the generator's cell, electricity turns that salt into chlorine. So your pool is still sanitized with chlorine; you're just making it on-site instead of buying and adding it.

The water is only lightly salty, around 2,700–3,400 ppm. That's about a tenth as salty as the ocean. Most people can barely taste it.

Why people love salt

  • Softer-feeling water and, for many people, less red eyes and itchy skin
  • Less chlorine smell and less fading on swimsuits
  • Steady chlorine. The system makes it every day, so you don't get the big swings of adding chlorine by hand
  • No hauling jugs or tablets from the store

What to know before you switch

  • Upfront cost. You'll need the generator and cell, plus installation.
  • The cell wears out. A well-maintained cell usually lasts 3 to 7 years before it needs replacing.
  • It still needs care. The cell has to be cleaned of calcium scale regularly. Neglecting that is the top reason cells fail early. pH also tends to creep up on salt pools, so it still needs testing and balancing.
  • Salt and surfaces. Salt can be hard on some natural stone and metal around the pool, so I check your deck and equipment before recommending a conversion.

Is it right for you?

Salt is a great fit if you want steadier water with less hands-on chemical work, and you're OK with maintaining the cell. If your pool is on a regular cleaning plan, the day-to-day difference for you is mostly how the water feels.

I handle saltwater conversions from start to finish: sizing the generator, installing it, balancing the water and adding the salt. I can also service and clean existing salt systems.
