Why Florida pools turn green so fast

In a Florida summer, a pool can go from clear to green in a few days. Heavy afternoon storms dilute the chlorine, wash in leaves and fertilizer, and the heat and sun burn through what's left. A clogged filter or a pump that isn't running long enough gives algae the dead spots it needs.

The good news: most green pools can be brought back without draining. It takes the right chemistry, a lot of brushing and a filter that keeps up.

Green-to-clean

How we get it back to clear

Every green pool is different, but recovery usually looks like this.

  1. 01

    Clear the debris

Leaves and muck come out, and the baskets get emptied so water can flow.

  2. 02

    Test and balance

We balance the chemistry so the chlorine can do its job.

  3. 03

    Shock and treat

A heavy dose of chlorine kills the algae, with an algaecide to speed things up.

  4. 04

    Brush everything

Walls, steps and floor, to break up algae so it can be filtered out.

  5. 05

    Run and clean the filter

Dead algae ends up in the filter, so it often needs cleaning more than once.

  6. 06

    Vacuum and re-test

We vacuum the dead algae off the floor, then re-test and adjust over the next visits until the water is clear and stays balanced.

Questions

Green-to-Clean FAQ

How long does a green-to-clean take?
It depends on how green the pool is and how long it's been sitting. A lightly green pool can clear in a day or two. A pool that's been neglected for weeks can take several visits.
Will you need to drain my pool?
Almost never, and we recommend against it. Florida's high water table can push up on an empty pool and crack or even lift the shell, and fresh fill water costs money and still has to be balanced. With the right chemistry, brushing and filtration, we can clear a green pool while it stays full.
Can you keep it clean afterward?
Weekly, bi-weekly and monthly cleaning is available in Spring Hill with limited openings. If we can't fit you in, we'll gladly point you to a trusted local cleaning company, and we're always here for repairs and equipment.
