Warm water without the big bill

Once it dips into the 60s, a lot of Hernando County pools sit unused until spring. For most pools here, a heat pump is the best way to keep swimming. It works like an air conditioner in reverse, pulling heat out of the air and moving it into the water. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heat pumps put out 3 to 7 units of heat for every unit of electricity they use.

Size matters. A heater that's too small runs constantly and never catches up. We size heaters based on your pool's surface area, how much wind and shade it gets, and how warm you want it.

Heat pump vs. gas

Which one fits your pool?

For most pools in Hernando County, we recommend a heat pump. Our winters are mild enough that it runs well most days, and it costs far less to run over time.

Gas makes sense if you want a spa hot quickly, or only heat the pool now and then, like for a holiday weekend. Some homes with a pool and spa use both.

  • Brent is professional, very reliable and thoroughly knowledgeable about pool care, filter and heat pump maintenance and pool chemistry. He documents his weekly service by email and readily answers any of my questions. Brent works with salt water pools, too. Brent’s fee is fair. His pool service is excellent.

Questions

Pool Heater & Heat Pump FAQ

Heat pump or gas heater: which is better here?
For most pools in Hernando County, a heat pump. It costs much less to run and handles our mild winters well. Gas makes sense if you want a spa hot quickly or only heat now and then. Some pool and spa setups use both.
Why is my heat pump running but not heating?
Common causes are low water flow (often a dirty filter or a closed valve), very cold air (heat pumps work best above about 45–50°F), a dirty or iced coil, or a sensor, board or setting problem, and we fix all of those. If it turns out to be a refrigerant problem, we'll let you know and go over your options, including a new unit if that makes more sense.
What heater repairs can you do?
We handle troubleshooting, display and control boards, sensors, flow switches and the water-side problems that stop a heater or heat pump. If it turns out to be a refrigerant or gas burner problem, we'll let you know and go over your options, including a new unit if that makes more sense.
Can I control my heater from my phone?
Often, yes. Most newer heat pumps can connect to an automation system from Pentair, Hayward or Jandy, or to a PoolSync controller. We check what your heater is compatible with and set up the app for you. For example, we upgraded a Weeki Wachee heat pump with PoolSync so the owner can set pool and spa temperatures from a phone.
Do you warranty heater installs?
Yes. The heater carries the manufacturer's warranty, and our installation work is backed for 90 days.
