Why so many pumps are variable speed now

If your old pump died, you may have heard you can't just swap in the same single-speed model or motor anymore. That's federal law, not an upsell. The good news is that a variable-speed pump can run slower for most of the day, and running slower uses far less power.

Most of our pump jobs aren't a straight swap. Older equipment pads often need some re-plumbing to fit the new pump, and the speeds have to be set for your filter, heater and cleaner. A variable-speed pump left on high all day won't save you much, so programming it is part of every install.

Pool Pump Replacement

What's included in a pump replacement

  • The right pump

Sized for your pool and plumbing. We install Pentair, Hayward and Jandy, including the Pentair IntelliFlo VSF.

  • Re-plumbing to fit

New pipe, fittings and unions where the old layout doesn't line up, so it flows well and looks clean.

  • Wiring check

We make sure the wiring and breaker are right for the new pump.

  • Programmed speeds

Schedules and speeds set for filtering, heating, your cleaner and spa, so you actually get the savings.

  • Old pump hauled off

We remove the old pump and leave the equipment pad clean.

  • Pump repairs too

Not every pump needs replacing. Seals, lids, baskets and other parts can often be fixed.

The federal rules

What changed, and when

The U.S. Department of Energy phased out single-speed pumps, and then the single-speed replacement motors that were a loophole. Total horsepower (THP) is on the motor label.

  1. Pumps go variable speed

New and replacement pool filter pumps over about 1 total horsepower must be variable speed.

  2. Replacement motors follow

Replacement pool pump motors from 1.15 to 5 THP must have variable-speed control. The motor-swap loophole is closed.

  3. Smaller motors too

Replacement motors from 0.5 to 1.15 THP must have variable-speed control.

Questions

Pool Pump Replacement FAQ

Can't I just replace the motor on my old pump?
For most pools, no. Since September 29, 2025, replacement pool pump motors from 1.15 to 5 total horsepower must have variable-speed control, and smaller motors (0.5 to 1.15 total horsepower) follow on September 28, 2027. New and replacement filter pumps over about 1 total horsepower have had to be variable speed since July 19, 2021. Read the full explainer.
Will a variable-speed pump lower my electric bill?
It should. ENERGY STAR says certified variable-speed pumps use up to 70% less energy than standard pumps, about $350 a year. Your savings depend on pool size, run time and how the pump is programmed. Try the savings calculator.
Which pump brands do you install?
Pentair, Hayward and Jandy. We'll recommend a pump based on your pool, your plumbing and the rest of your equipment.
Do you warranty pump installs?
Yes. The pump carries the manufacturer's warranty, and our installation work is backed for 90 days.
